Cost Survey For Anesthesia Practices: 2006 Report Based on 2005 Data

Conducted by the Medical Group Management Association In Collaboration with ASA

The third annual MGMA-ASA Cost Survey for Anesthesia Practices is now available for purchase.  ASA has obtained a $165 discount for our members; instead of paying $480, you are entitled to the “Affiliate” price of $315. Simply enter the following code in the “promotion code” box on the ordering page to get the discount pricing: ASA06OT05.  To order the book, or to see an overview, the table of contents and sample tables, go to the MGMA website.

ASA members who completed the survey instrument last year have received complimentary copies of the Report.

The Cost Survey Report is an excellent resource to make production, revenue and practice expense comparisons across small, midsize and large anesthesiology practices, with further breakdowns according to payer mix and the number of trauma centers staffed.

The information includes data on hospital stipends, staffing ratios, numbers of cases, time units and provider costs.  With these benchmarking data, you can:

  • Uncover opportunities to cut costs and increase revenue;
  • Determine how payer mix can affect your practice;
  • Review staffing levels compared with revenue and other variables;
  • Define tighter strategic-planning models to boost productivity;
  • Evaluate the direct revenue or expenses of specific work processes.

New in the 2006 Report:

Separate Cost Survey Report for pain management practices, including revenue, charges, cases, treatment locations, evaluation and management visits and chronic-pain procedures
Detail on staffing and operating cost broken out per physician, per anesthetic location, by number of trauma centers and more.

A dashboard introducing each section of the report to help you benchmark key indicators for different types of anesthesiology and pain medicine practices.
Plan now to complete the 2007 survey questionnaire and earn your free copy of the next Report.  The questionnaire will be posted on the ASA website as soon as it becomes available.  If you’d like to receive an email notification when the survey is ready for downloading, please send an email to with the subject line, “Practice Cost Survey.”  ASA members and your practice administrators are strongly encouraged to participate in the survey, which could shape your decisions about anesthesia and pain management practice operations.  All data will be kept confidential.

To order the 2006 MGMA Cost Survey for Anesthesia Practices, please visit the product page on the MGMA website.
