ASA News

Physician-led care receives national attention
Media coverage discussing non-physicians' increased role in providing medical care to patients as a result of health care reform has surfaced in recent weeks.

• ASA President John M. Zerwas, M.D. submitted a letter to the editor in response to the Los Angeles Times February 9 article "State lacks doctors to meet demand of national healthcare law." Dr. Zerwas expressed ASA's support that physician assistants and other mid-level providers are best deployed in physician-led teams.

•Fox News aired a segment this week addressing the lack of doctors in California to meet health care reform. The interview stressed the safety risk of relying on physician assistants and mid-level providers, including nurse anesthetists, to replace physicians.

•In response to the February 3 Wall Street Journal article "Battles Erupt Over Filling Doctors' Shoes," ASA President John M. Zerwas, M.D. explained in a letter to the editor how anesthesiologists lead anesthesia care teams to make critical medical decisions on behalf of patients.

New rules require manufacturers to report gifts and meals to physicians

Beginning on August 1, 2013, as a result of the Physician Payment Sunshine Act - a provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) - certain manufacturers of drugs, devices, biologicals or medical supplies covered by Medicare, Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) will begin collecting data on financial relationship with physicians, including gifts or other transfers of value to a physician worth more than $10, or $100 in total gifts per calendar year given to a physician. These disclosures will eventually be reported on a public database.

ASAPAC:  Another record year!
For the fourth consecutive year, ASAPAC is America's #1 physician PAC.  In calendar year 2012, ASAPAC raised $1.82 million.  ASAPAC is consistently in the top 50 trade PACs in the country.  Learn more about ASAPAC.

ASA raises concerns to FDA about proposed changes to opioid labeling
ASA presented at a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) public hearing with concerns about the impact of proposed changes to opioid labeling made by the Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROP) group.  These labeling changes would strike the term "moderate" for non-cancer pain, add a maximum daily dose equivalent to 100 milligrams of morphine for non-cancer pain and add a maximum duration of 90 days for continuous use for non-cancer pain.

This Month in Anesthesia History

The month of February has been an important one in the history of organized anesthesia in the U.S. The American Society of Anesthetists was founded on February 13, 1936. In a letter from Dr. Paul Wood to Dr. John Lundy at the Mayo Clinic, dated February 14, Wood noted, "I was reminded at the meeting last night which approved the change in title from New York to American Society of Anesthetists..." This letter is in the Collected Papers of John Lundy, Mayo Foundation Archive in Rochester, Minnesota. The current name was approved in April 1945.
