Congress meets about SGR and separate sequestration Medicare cuts
Congress returns this week before the Thanksgiving recess to discuss a large number of unresolved fiscal issues, including the 26.5 percent Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) cut and the 2011 Budget Control Act's mandatory sequestration cuts. The combination of these and other unresolved spending and revenue measures are called the "fiscal cliff."
2013 Physician Fee Schedule rule changes to Value-Based Payment Modifier
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services final rule on the 2013 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule included modifications to its original proposal on how to begin implementation of the Value-Based Payment Modifier. The modifier will use a quality and cost tier system to groups of 100 or more eligible professionals.
ASA discusses next steps after CMS chronic pain ruling
ASA Vice President for Professional Affairs Norman A. Cohen, M.D. expressed disappointment in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) chronic pain ruling. In a November 6 Inside Health Policy article (subscription required), Dr. Cohen stressed ASA will continue its state lobbying, grassroots efforts and partnerships with other pain societies to ensure pain patients receive the safest care possible.
