When a routine surgical procedure goes bad or an emergency arises, patients can rely on physician anesthesiologists to evaluate, diagnose and intervene, providing patients with optimal care - saving lives. We know that, but now we need to make sure legislators, policy influencers, hospital administrators, media and the public know it as well.
Join us in our new educational endeavor, When Seconds Count...Physician Anesthesiologists Save Lives™, to advocate for patient-centered, physician-led anesthesia care. ASA has conducted extensive research into perceptions of physician anesthesiologists and found that a majority of the public and many policymakers are unaware that anesthesiologists are physicians. Even fewer know how physician anesthesiologists save lives before, during and after surgery.
ASA developed When Seconds Count™ to emphasize how physician anesthesiologists' specialized medical education and training provides patients with the highest-quality and safest care, and highlights this message through stories of physician anesthesiologists who make critical medical decisions to save lives.
As our strongest advocates, we need your support to spread the word and build momentum. To help you do this, we developed a Member Toolkit of resources available for download at asahq.org/WhenSecondsCount .
The toolkit includes an internal a message map, as well as fact sheets and a brochure to educate others on the vital role of physician anesthesiologists. We also are collecting more life-saving stories from physician anesthesiologists and patients. If you or a patient has one to share, please submit it on the website.
When seconds count, when a life hangs in the balance, when medical emergencies or other complications occur, patient-centered, physician-led anesthesia care is more important than ever. Our patients deserve no less.
