Anesthesia Foundation

The Anesthesia Foundation provides loans to anesthesiology residents of up to $7,500 at no interest if repaid within six months of completing training. In 2024, 45 residents received $337,500 in loans; 17 former loan recipients completed repaying their loans totaling $116,000; and 12 of the loans were repaid before maturity without incurring any interest charges. The Anesthesia Foundation received many notes of gratitude for the assistance provided and continues to make new loans as the need increases, with many residents struggling with big city rents, inflation, family pressures, and program restrictions on moonlighting.

Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation

Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation

The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) is an organization with volunteers who work tirelessly to achieve our vision “that no one shall be harmed by anesthesia care.” Foundation activities are focused on work in research, education, and communication. Every year APSF hosts their Stoelting Consensus Conference addressing a major patient safety issue. In 2025 the theme will be “Transforming maternal care: innovations and collaborations to reduce morbidity and mortality.” APSF has also created a technology education initiative, a new webpage dedicated to preventing and treating surgical fires, and finally, a new initiative on patient engagement. All can be accessed on the APSF webpage.

The ASA Charitable Foundation (ASACF), in collaboration with the ASA Committee on Global Health, is focused on improving global perioperative safety and outcomes, especially in under-resourced areas. Now in its 10th year, the ASACF’s Global Scholars Program provided the opportunity for 10 young leaders in our specialty from low- and middle-income countries to participate in the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2024 annual meeting. In 2024 the ASACF provided funding for the ASA’s SafeHaven wellness initiative, as well as $20,000 to the Lifebox Foundation in support of the ASA Resident Lifebox Challenge, supporting Lifebox’s mission to make pulse oximeters and portable capnometers widely available in regions where they previously were scarce or absent.

The mission of the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology (WLM) is to "Advance Anesthesiology by Preserving and Sharing its Heritage and Knowledge." In 2024, the WLM successfully completed phase one renovation of its new museum collection facility in Schaumburg, IL. Alongside this, the WLM upgraded its collection management system and implemented a new donor software. Finally, they proudly hosted their first WLM Fellow since the renovations were completed.

Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research

Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research

For more than 35 years, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) has been dedicated to developing the next generation of physician-investigators in anesthesiology. In 2024, FAER awarded grants to 11 anesthesiologists totaling $2,150,000 and celebrated the selection of Julie K. Freed, MD, PhD, as the inaugural FAER-NAM Fellow, the first such National Academy of Medicine (NAM) fellowship specially designated for anesthesiologists. FAER matched 74 medical students to 43 host institutions for the 2024 Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship (MSARF) program—the largest number of sponsored students in a single year in the program’s history. During the third annual Academic Giving Competition, 31 academic anesthesiology departments raised $371,239, setting a new high for the competition and raising enough to fund an entire Mentored Research Training Grant and Research in Education Grant plus sponsor four MSARF participants.
