FAER is pleased to announce Sean Mackey, MD, PhD, Redlich Professor and Chief of the Division of Pain Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at Stanford University, as this year’s FAER-Helrich Research Lecturer. Dr. Mackey will present his lecture, titled “From Pain's Enigma to Clinical Transformation: Unraveling Mechanisms, Forging Biomarkers, and Empowering Clinicians and Patients,” on Saturday, October 19, at ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2024 in Philadelphia. The lecture will be followed by a panel expanding upon the concepts discussed.
In 2001, FAER held the first FAER Honorary Research Lecture as a means of recognizing outstanding scholarship by a scientist in an effort to encourage young anesthesiologists to consider careers in research and teaching. This is crucial if anesthesiology is to maintain its reputation as a medical specialty continuously striving for excellence in patient care. In 2014, the Board of Directors voted to name the Honorary Research Lecture after Martin Helrich, MD, FAER’s first Executive Director who passed away in 2013. It is now called the FAER-Helrich Research Lecture.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Mackey on his selection as the FAER-Helrich Research Lecturer and thanking him for his expansive contributions to anesthesiology, research, and medicine. To follow are words of support from those who nominated Dr. Mackey as this lecturer.
“Sean exemplifies the characteristics required of FAER-Helrich Research Lecturers through his distinguished career as a physician-scientist, mentor, and educator and his exceptional commitment to ‘paying it forward’ and training academic leaders in anesthesiology.”
- Brian T. Bateman, MD, MSc; Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine, Stanford University
“I have known Dr. Mackey for approximately 25 years – first as his faculty advisor while he was an Anesthesiology resident at Stanford, and later as the Chair of our department. Dr. Mackey has had a distinguished career as a physician-scientist, mentor, and educator, and I am pleased to support his selection as the FAER-Helrich Research Lecturer in the strongest possible terms.”
- Ronald G. Pearl, MD, PhD, FASA; Professor and Immediate Past Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine, Stanford University
We encourage those attending ANESTHESIOLOGY 2024 to join Dr. Mackey and FAER for this year’s Helrich Lecture. Stay tuned for more information on Dr. Mackey and this year’s lecture, including an article highlighting Dr. Mackey in the September 2024 issue of the ASA Monitor.
