The Next Generation of Anesthesiology Investigators: Past MSARFs Matched into Anesthesiology in 2025

April 16, 2025

On March 21, hopeful medical students around the country celebrated matching into residencies and taking the next step on their medical journey. The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) was delighted to join these future physicians in their excitement – particularly the Foundation’s past Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship (MSARF) participants who matched into anesthesiology residencies on Match Day 2025.

For those unfamiliar, the MSARF program provides medical students an eight-week research experience within an academic anesthesiology department. During the fellowship, students participate in research, training activities, and clinical anesthesia activities, all under the guidance of a dedicated mentor. The enthusiasm MSARF participants show for science in the specialty is truly inspiring, and FAER is proud of its role in preparing these aspiring investigators to thrive in the rewarding field of anesthesiology research.

On Match Day, FAER reached out to our MSARF alumni inquiring about where they’d matched and any words they’d like to share about their experience with the program. Please enjoy their responses below and join us in congratulating these future leaders of anesthesiology!

“MSARF was one of the most influential parts of my medical school career. It was my first introduction to the field of anesthesiology, which I am beyond excited to pursue in residency at the University of Colorado. MSARF was a huge talking point throughout my residency interviews, and I felt passionate about the research I completed with the support of my amazing mentors.”
- Margo Jane Bush, 2022 MSARF Participant; Matched to University of Colorado

“Early exposure and mentorship in anesthesiology through MSARF fostered my interest in pediatric anesthesiology and critical care and made it into a reality. In such a niche field, it was vital to get connected with mentors, answer clinical questions through research, and learn through shadowing experiences, which was facilitated by my role a MSARF fellow.”
- Rebekah Chun, 2022 MSARF Participant; Matched to Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital

“MSARF was pivotal in establishing connections to mentors in the field but also to my student colleagues across the country. I developed friendships that have lasted and was so excited to see them on the interview trail and their success in Match 2025. MSARF provided the perfect catalyst for these connections and I’m so very grateful.”
- Devon Evanovich, 2022 MSARF Participant; Matched to University of California, San Francisco

“My MSARF fellowship was an incredible opportunity which afforded me time to grow my clinical skills and passion for anesthesiology. It was an experience I spoke about during all of my residency interviews and with students interested in applying.”
- Peter Fusco, 2023 MSARF Participant; Matched to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital

“MSARF played a huge role in my pursuit of anesthesiology. It provided early exposure and research work to help hone my interests and strengthen my passion for the field.”
- Rachel Grasfield, 2022 MSARF Participant; Matched to Georgetown University Hospital

“MSARF allowed me to get involved in ground-breaking clinical anesthesia research that allowed me to grow as a researcher and positively influenced my residency application. I know that I want to stay involved in clinical anesthesia research in the future and have the tools to do so thanks to FAER and the MSARF program.”
- Nicolas Hutt, 2024 MSARF Participant; Matched to Duke University

“MSARF was a pivotal moment in my career, it made me fall in love with anesthesiology and discovered an unknown passion for academic medicine. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have done this program.”
- Amy Jacob, 2022 MSARF Participant; Matched to Mount Sinai Morningside/West

“MSARF solidified my interest in anesthesia and was one of the driving points of going into the field. The research, clinical exposure, and mentorship that I gained from MSARF was invaluable in driving me toward anesthesia and building a strong anesthesia application for residency.”
- Steven Klein, 2022 MSARF Participant; Matched to UT San Antonio

“MSARF was the kindling that ignited my passion for anesthesiology and the reason I will be an anesthesiologist.”
- Matthew McCarron, 2022 MSARF Participant; Matched to Medical University of South Carolina

“FAER is the reason I ultimately decided to pursue anesthesiology! I was so intellectually fulfilled during my summer doing research with FAER that by the time I got to clinical rotations I knew that no other specialty would compare.”
- Brooke Tobias, 2022 MSARF Participant; Matched to University of Southern California

“I was interested in research since the beginning of medical school, and FAER MSARF jumped out at me as a unique opportunity to develop my research skills at a new institution. The summer I spent in the OR while performing research allowed me to meet leaders and new friends in the field. I high recommend this program!”
- Felix Yang, 2024 MSARF Participant; Matched to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

“The FAER MSARF program is an excellent way to start a career an academic anesthesiology!”
- Amy Wu, 2022 MSARF Participant; Matched to Columbia University

“Participating in MSARF has been my favorite experience in medical school as it became a turning point in my career. It gave me the space to ask questions, explore the impact of anesthesiology, and understand how research drives patient care forward. The mentorship I received during the program helped me see how I could contribute meaningfully to both clinical practice and innovation in the field. MSARF is an incredible way to gain early exposure to anesthesiology, mentorship, and research. It’s an outstanding opportunity for future students to see how the field can shape not just their goals during medical school, but also the kind of physician they aspire to become.”
- Craig Yamaguchi, 2023 MSARF Participant; Matched to Oregon Health and Science University

“FAER absolutely changed my medical student career and allowed me to find mentors I never would’ve known otherwise.”
- Lisa Young, 2024 MSARF Participant; Matched to University of California, San Francisco

“MSARF solidified my decision to pursue anesthesiology and I ultimately matched at the institution where I had done MSARF at.”
