About FAER
Position Summary
The FAER President & CSO, in collaboration with the Board Chair, the CEO, and officers of the FAER Board of Directors, assists in strategic planning, MRTG program management, fundraising, community awareness, and Board development.
The ideal candidate is an anesthesiologist and active member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists who has experience in research, visibility throughout national anesthesia organizations, a history of leadership, extensive experience in NIH grants review process (PCORI and AHRQ experience will also be considered), and a history of federal funding. Familiarity with philanthropic endeavors is an additional strength. The ability to network, form alliances, negotiate difficult issues, and promote the importance of research are also important.
Qualifications and Desirable Attributes
- Member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists
- Board-certified physician anesthesiologist
- Currently or previously employed in academia
- Current or former federally funded research
- Has successfully mentored young anesthesiologists and others to independence in research careers.
- Knowledge of national anesthesiology organizations, preferably having played a leadership role in one or more of these organizations
- Ability to make innovative connections and form productive relationships with multiple groups and organizations with goals and missions that overlap with FAER
- History of driving strategic planning processes at national organizations
- History of significant published research
- Experience with philanthropy and development
- Participation in NIH study sections
Administrative Responsibilities
- Serves as an ex officio non-voting member of all committees
- Assist with reviewing and updating FAER’s strategic plan annually, in consultation with the Board of Directors
- Assist in creation of and serve on strategic task forces
- Work with FAER Leadership and Board to build, engage and retain a strong and active Board of Directors
- Lead and support individual Board members in communicating the mission, programs and needs of FAER to their local, state, academic, and subspecialty societies in anesthesiology and medicine as a whole, as well as to ASA members, its officers, Board of Directors, and members of the ASA House of Delegates
- Oversee the FAER grantee database project and develop, with FAER leadership and the FAER Board of Directors, regular reports and individual research projects using this database
- Provide assistance to the FAER Grants Committee Chair as needed
- Provide assistance to the MRTG planning committee and staff regarding the annual grantee meeting
- Serve as the FAER Program Officer on the ASA Committee on Research
External Relations Responsibilities
- Serve as primary liaison to ASA President, officers, and members of the ASA Board of Directors
- Represent and promote FAER’s interests to the ASA officers, Board of Directors, House of Delegates, committees, and the general membership
- Promote partnerships and collaborations with subspecialty societies, corporations and private practice groups in support of FAER’s mission
- Expand awareness of FAER through media opportunities
- Establish and maintain contacts with relevant groups in science and medicine as a whole
- Primary liaison to ASA’s Vice President of Scientific Affairs and Chair of the ASA Committee on Research
- Provide Grand Rounds to academic departments about FAER and research funding opportunities
- Serve on the Steering Committee of the Anesthesia Research Council (ARC) and the Advisory Committee to the NAM Health Policy Fellowships and Leadership Program
Development Responsibilities
- Identify, initiate, establish and implement cooperative ventures with grant-awarding institutions, foundations, societies and corporations
- Work closely with the FAER Development Officer and the FAER Board Chair on corporate fundraising by attending pitch meetings and requests
- Represent and promote FAER programs and funding needs at academic and subspecialty society meetings as identified in the annual the development plan
- Play a lead role in coordination with the FAER development team in executing the annual FAER Academic Giving Competition

Approximately 0.25 FTE

- Administrative and travel assistance from a FAER staff member

Location
FAER is located at the ASA headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois. If the President & CSO is not located in the Chicago area, travel to the FAER office will be required occasionally in coordination with the FAER Board Chair visits in addition to other FAER related travel.

- FAER staff members report to the FAER CEO
