FAER and Society for Pediatric Anesthesia Announce New Co-Sponsored Mentored Research Training Grant

December 6, 2024

The Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA), a professional society dedicated to advancing the health and well-being of children through perioperative care, education, research, advocacy, and collaboration among members, patients, families, and professional organizations worldwide, has teamed with the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) to offer a co-sponsored SPA-FAER Mentored Research Training Grant. The grant is available as part of FAER’s Spring 2025 Grant Cycle, with additional information on the application process included below.

The SPA-FAER Mentored Research Training Grant will provide $250,000 in funding over a two-year period to develop the next generation of pediatric anesthesiology investigators who will contribute to advancing the health and well-being of children.

“The SPA is excited to join with the FAER to fund the SPA-FAER Mentored Research Training Grant. This co-sponsored award will provide invaluable support for developing physician-scientists who are committed to improving our understanding and management of children in the perioperative period. This is a significant commitment by SPA and FAER to develop the next generation of scholars who will create the evidence to improve the delivery of anesthetic care for tomorrow’s children.”
 - Jim Fehr MD, FAAP, Immediate Past President of SPA
 - Peggy P. McNaull, MD, President of SPA

“FAER is proud to team with SPA to offer this new co-sponsored award. The SPA-FAER Mentored Research Training Grant is a valuable new offering that will equip physician-investigators focused on improving the care and well-being of children with the tools they need for a successful, impactful career in the field. It is so important for organizations like ours to collaborate and support the best science in our specialty. FAER looks forward to standing alongside SPA in this endeavor as we witness how the research that will come from this award will shape pediatric anesthesiology for the future."
 - Max B. Kelz, MD, PhD, President and Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of FAER
 - Dolores B. Njoku, MD, Chair of the FAER Board of Directors

SPA and FAER will award two SPA-FAER Mentored Research Training Grants to the sponsoring institution of a highly promising new pediatric anesthesiology scientist, the first as part of FAER’s Spring 2025 Grant Cycle, and the second in 2027. The grant aims to help anesthesiologists develop the skills and preliminary data they need to become independent investigators in the area of pediatric anesthesiology.

Prior to submitting a full application, this funding mechanism requires the submission of a Letter of Intent (LOI), after which selected investigators will be invited to submit a full application.  LOI submissions for the SPA-FAER MRTG are open today, December 6, 2024, through January 15, 2025. Additional details regarding application requirements and process, as well as links to submit LOIs, are available for download on the dedicated SPA-FAER MRTG webpage.
