Donald E. Arnold, MD, FACHE, FASA, is President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He is also Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, a member of the Board of Directors of Mercy Health East Communities and sits on the Board of Directors of Western Anesthesiology Associates, Inc., in Ballwin, Missouri.
Dr. Arnold has served ASA in numerous roles, including President-elect, First Vice President, Treasurer, and Assistant Treasurer. He is chair of the Budget Committee and vice chair of Committee on Representation to World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists. He has also chaired ASA’s Section on Fiscal Affairs, Committee on Quality Management and Departmental Administration, Ad Hoc Committee on Deep Sedation and Education, and Ad Hoc Committee on Payment and Care Delivery Models. He has served on ASA’s Board of Directors, Budget Committee, and several other ad hoc and standing committees. Dr. Arnold was also a director and officer of the Anesthesia Quality Institute, and a director and officer of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research.
In addition to his commitments to ASA, Dr. Arnold has served as a full examiner and senior editor for the Standardized Oral Exam for the American Board of Anesthesiology, guest reviewer for Anesthesia & Analgesia, and ASA liaison to The Joint Commission. He served as president of the Missouri Society of Anesthesiologists (MSA) and St. Louis Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Arnold serves on the Board of Directors for the Mercy East Communities. He has been recognized by the MSA with its Distinguished Service Award and by Mercy with the Charles E. Thoele Physician Leadership Award.
Dr. Arnold received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, Wisconsin. He completed his transitional internship at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, Connecticut, and his residency in anesthesiology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Hanover, New Hampshire. He is board-certified in anesthesiology.
He resides in St. Louis with his wife, Tamara K. Ehlert, MD; they have three adult children.
Patrick Giam, MD, FASA, is President Elect of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He is
a physician partner with U.S. Anesthesia Partners, practicing at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, and specializes in neuroanesthesia. He has faculty appointments at the Weill Cornell Medical College, Houston Methodist Academic Institute, and Texas A&M School of Medicine.
A long-time member of ASA and advocate for the specialty, Dr. Giam has served ASA in numerous roles, most recently as first vice president, speaker of the House of Delegates and vice president of the Division of Administrative Affairs. Dr. Giam has served as chair of ASA’s Committee on Large Group Practice and as a member of the Committee on Bylaws, Committee on Governance Effectiveness and Efficiencies, Special Board Committee on Expert Witness Testimony, Committee on Practice Management, Ad Hoc Committee on Accountable Care Organizations, Governing Documents Alignment, Ad Hoc Committee on NACOR Assessment and Business Development, Ad Hoc Committee on Quality Practice Recognition, Ad Hoc Committee on Payment Reform, Ad Hoc Committee on Board Certification and Maintenance, Ad Hoc Committee on Annual Meeting Assessment, and Committee on Neuroanesthesiology. Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors of ASA, the Anesthesia Quality Institute, and ASAPAC.
Dr. Giam is a past President of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists, where he continues to serve on its Board of Directors. He is a member of the Texas Medical Association, the American Institute of Parliamentarians, and is a registered parliamentarian of the National Association of Parliamentarians.
Dr. Giam received his Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Texas A&M University in College Station and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his internship in internal medicine and his residency in anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and his fellowship in cardiovascular anesthesiology at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas.
He and his wife, Julie, have two adult daughters and live in Houston, Texas.
Jeffrey T. Mueller, M.D., FASA, is first vice president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). Dr. Mueller has served ASA in numerous roles. He is currently vice chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Center for Anesthesia and Perioperative Economics (CAPE) Oversight and has been a delegate in the ASA House of Delegates since 2007. He has also served as ASA vice president for professional affairs, director on the ASA Board of Directors, chair of the Anesthesia Quality Institute’s Board of Directors, and chair of the ASAPAC Executive Board. In 2015, Dr. Mueller received the Bertram W. Coffer, M.D., Excellence in Government award from ASA in recognition of his exemplary contributions to the specialty of anesthesiology, its practitioners, and patients.
In addition to his commitments to ASA, Dr. Mueller served as president of the Arizona Society of Anesthesiologists and president of the Arizona Medical Association. He also served as chair of the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association’s Committee on Clinical Leadership. In 2023, he received the National Leadership Award from the Arizona Medical Association and the Distinguished Service Award from the Arizona Society of Anesthesiologists.
Dr. Mueller received his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tulsa and his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis. He completed his internship in internal medicine and his residency in anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He is board-certified in anesthesiology.
Dr. Mueller lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his wife Eileen Klein.
Ronald L. Harter, M.D., FASA, is immediate past president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).
Dr. Harter is a former Jay J. Jacoby professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, and a practicing physician anesthesiologist at the University’s Wexner Medical Center.
Dr. Harter is a member of ASA’s Executive Committee and Administrative Council. Over the past three decades, he has served ASA in numerous roles, most recently as president and speaker of the House of Delegates. He has also served as ASA’s representative to the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience. He has chaired ASA’s Ad Hoc Committee on Physician Well-Being, Young Physicians’ Committee, Committee on Medical Students and Residents, and Committee on Bylaws. He has been a member of several ASA committees, including the Perioperative Surgical Home Steering Committee and Ad Hoc Committee on Perioperative Medicine.
Dr. Harter has been an active member of the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists since 1994 and served as its president.
Dr. Harter received a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Capital University in Ohio and completed his Doctor of Medicine at The Ohio State University. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
He lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife Katharine; they have five children.
