Bonnie Milas, M.D., a member of ASA’s Committee on Trauma and Emergency Preparedness, was quoted in the article, which discussed the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recommendation to allow over-the-counter sale of the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone, but the out-of-pocket costs may pose a barrier to access. The article said Dr. Milas likens keeping the life-saving naloxone kits on hand to having fire extinguishers in the home. “There’s lots of things that people put in their homes to provide protection to their family or to anyone who visits,” she said.
