American Society of Anesthesiologists announces Perioperative Surgical Home scholarship recipients

ANESTHESIOLOGY^® 2018 event will recognize awardees and ASA Industry Supporters

SAN FRANCISCO – The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today announced the recipients of its Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) Scholarship in which awardees will receive funding to participate in the PSH Learning Collaborative 2020 to support the implementation of a PSH pilot at their institution. The three scholars will be formally awarded, and industry supporters recognized for their support, at a special event on Oct. 15 during the ANESTHESIOLOGY^® 2018 annual meeting in San Francisco.

The PSH is a patient-centered, physician-led, team-based model of care that helps navigate patients through the entire surgical experience, starting with the decision to have surgery through discharge from the hospital and beyond. The PSH Learning Collaborative 2020 brings together leading organizations and subject matter experts from across the country.

“The PSH is a game changer in health care redesign that helps institutions improve patient care, population health, provider experience and reduce costs,” said Gary E. Loyd, M.D., chair of the PSH Scholarship Program. “On behalf of the review board, we look forward to assisting each of the scholars by providing them with the necessary tools and training as they implement their PSH pilots and optimize and expand into new service lines or system-wide conversion.”

Scholars were chosen based on a variety of criteria including well-defined plans for implementing a PSH pilot, organizational capabilities, prior experience with quality improvement initiatives and need for assistance. The three scholarship recipients are:

• Barton Health (South Lake Tahoe, California), a small and rural non-profit community hospital and health system in the 340B program, will implement a total joint replacement PSH pilot.

• Tri-City Medical Center (Oceanside, California) is a non-profit hospital in the 340B program servicing Oceanside, Carlsbad and southwestern California areas. Tri-City will implement and sustain a PSH pilot for colorectal patients and use this knowledge to create a PSH pilot for urology patients.

• Pikeville Medical Center (Kentucky) is a non-profit community hospital and health system in the 340B program servicing rural southeast Kentucky, southwestern Virginia and southern West Virginia. Pikeville will implement a PSH pilot for orthopedic and bariatric patients.

An event to formally award the three institutions and recognize ASA Industry Supporters for their financial support will be held on Monday, Oct. 15 from 9:30-11 a.m. at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. During the event, the scholars will share their experience with the PSH model of care to date and discuss plans for their PSH pilots. Representatives from each awarded institution, ASA Industry Supporters, the PSH Scholarship Review Board and ASA leadership will be in attendance.
