ORLANDO, Fla. – The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today announced Randall M. Clark, M.D., FASA, has been named first vice president of ASA. Dr. Clark was elected at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2019 annual meeting in Orlando and will serve for one year.
Dr. Clark is professor of anesthesiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colorado and a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
“I am honored to be able to serve ASA and its members in this new role,” said Dr. Clark. “Physician anesthesiologists have an irreplaceable role in the care of patients. Whether in the operating room, the pain medicine clinic, the interventional procedure suite, or the intensive care unit, no medical specialist contributes more to the care of patients, and provides that care in more parts of a hospital, than physician anesthesiologists. I look forward to continuing ASA’s successes in advancing the specialty and to helping address the current challenges in our health care system. We will build on our recognized leadership in patient safety and continue to improve quality of care while lowering costs.”
As first vice president, Dr. Clark will serve as a member of the ASA Executive Committee, which consists of the president, president-elect, first vice president and immediate past president. The Executive Committee expedites, executes and administers the policies adopted by the ASA House of Delegates and ASA Board of Directors.
Dr. Clark has served ASA in numerous roles, most recently as chair of the ASA Section on Clinical Care. In this position, he provided oversight to the Committee on Equipment and Facilities, Committee on Occupational Health, Committee on Patient Blood Management, Committee on Respiratory Care, Committee on Surgical and Procedural Anesthesia, and Committee on Trauma and Emergency Preparedness. Dr. Clark is also a member of ASA’s Committee on Innovation, Committee on Professional Education Oversight, Committee on Governance Effectiveness and Efficiencies, Committee on Quality Management and Department Administration, and Committee on Pediatric Anesthesia.
In addition to his commitments to the Society, Dr. Clark is a long-serving member of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Society of Anesthesiologists and is part of the ASA Delegation to the American Medical Association. He also serves on the Anesthesia Quality Institute’s Board of Directors, and has held leadership positions with the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia Leadership Council, and Denver Medical Society.
Dr. Clark received his Bachelor of Science degree, with honors, from the University of Colorado in Boulder before graduating from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. He completed his anesthesiology residency and fellowships in pediatric and cardiac anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and is board-certified in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology.
Dr. Clark resides in Denver with his wife, obstetric anesthesiologist Joy. L. Hawkins, M.D., FASA. They have two daughters, Catherine and Victoria.
