Diversity, equity, and inclusion policies for ASA

ASA is committed to ensuring that diversity, equity, and inclusion are integral parts of our day-to-day management and work.  The ASA equal employment opportunity policy is our foundation, but we take action beyond that to ensure we value and honor the diverse perspectives each person brings to their work.

The definitions below help clarify our intentions.

• Diversity:
  The varied qualities, attributes, characteristics, experiences, backgrounds, and cultural influences that make each of us unique.  ASA seeks to grow our staff diversity to benefit from the varied perspectives each of us contributes.
• Equity:
  Fair and just treatment of all people.  This goes beyond equality, which is defined as treating everyone the same.  Equity recognizes that there are sometimes unique needs that need to be addressed for truly fair and just treatment.  ASA strives to ensure equity so that we all have what we need to do our best work.
• Inclusion:
  All individuals are included in feeling respected, accepted, and valued.  It involves authentic and empowered participation and a true sense of belonging.  Inclusion ensures that the varied perspectives we seek are heard and appreciated.

We recognize that continued success in meeting the needs of our employees and members requires the full and active participation of a diverse group of talented and committed individuals.  Diversity provides a variety of perspectives, while equity and inclusion ensure those varied people and perspectives are able to fully engage and contribute to ASA’s success.  All three of the above diversity elements are necessary to ensuring we are able to successfully fulfill our mission, achieve our vision, and live our core values while also creating a positive work environment where all employees have the opportunity to reach their full potential and maximize their contributions.
