ASA-AAOS Pain Alleviation Toolkit

ASA partnered with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) to develop strategies for safe and effective alleviation of postoperative pain and optimal opioid stewardship. We hope this unique partnership between two specialty societies can spread to other disciplines.

ASA and AAOS recognize the need for focused strategies for safe and effective alleviation of pain and optimal opioid stewardship.^1,2 In the orthopaedic surgical setting, open, empathic communication between the surgical team, patients, and families helps prepare patients for the pain of recovery from injury or surgery. This toolkit provides clinicians and patients with tools to help patients get as comfortable as possible, as safely as possible.
