ASA Member State Lawmakers Assigned to Committee Leadership

On January 23, 2019, the Texas State House of Representatives and Speaker Dennis Bonnen (R) renamed ASA Past-President and State Representative John Zerwas, M.D. (R) as Chair of the House Committee on Appropriations. ASA-member and State Representative Tom Oliverson, M.D. (R) was named as Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Insurance. 
 
The Texas Legislature only meets in odd-numbered years. Dr. Zerwas was first named Chair in 2017 under Speaker Joe Straus (R). The House Committee on Appropriations is responsible for reviewing all bills and resolutions that appropriate money from the state’s treasury. The House Committee on Insurance has legislative jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to insurance and the insurance industry, including the Texas Department of Insurance, the Texas Health Benefits Purchasing Cooperative, and the Office of Public Insurance Counsel.
