The Promoting Interoperability (PI) performance category accounts for 25% of an eligible clinician or group practice's total MIPS score. PI focuses on patient engagement and the electronic exchange of health information using certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT). PI measures and scoring are available on the QPP website.
Most physician anesthesiologists and their groups will not have to submit data for the MIPS Promoting Interoperability category. ECs and their practices that are designated under the special status categories of non-patient facing, hospital-based, or ambulatory surgery center-based are automatically exempt from reporting the PI category. If the EC or the group is designated in one of those special status categories, the 25% weighting of the PI performance category will be reallocated to the Quality performance category. ECs can check their participation status and special status on the QPP MIPS Participation Status website.
The special status policy and reweighting of the PI category is also applicable to those anesthesiologists and groups choosing to report a MIPS Value Pathway (MVP).
