Governing Council Positions
The ASA Medical Student Component Governing Council encourages student participation, develops young leaders with experience in organized medicine and improves student awareness of anesthesiology and the ASA. Expect to have fun, learn about anesthesia, create great friendships and meet new colleagues while helping student members.

All costs incurred to attend these meetings are the responsibility of each officer. President and President-Elect are provided funding. Therefore, ASA strongly encourages you to establish a relationship with your state component society and seek funding from either the state or your medical school in advance of each event.

Overview of President Position:
- Monitor the progress of ongoing projects completed by the ASA Medical Student Component
- Organize and lead all regular meetings of the Governing Council
- Promote ASA Medical Student Component events and resources using social media (e.g. Twitter)
Overview of President-Elect Position:
- Learn the responsibilities of the President and become familiar with communication, organization, and delegation of the ASA Medical Student Component
- Assist the President with the development and management of the Governing Council projects and meetings
- Promote ASA Medical Student Component events and resources using social media (e.g. Twitter)
Overview of Secretary Position:
- Attend and record minutes for the ASA Medical Student Component Governing Council meetings in March, August, and any other formal meeting time
- Communicate ASA Medical Student Component business to medical student members, including but not limited to email blasts and monthly e-newsletters
- Responsible for communicating with students who submit articles for the ASA MSC webpage, including but not limited to, sending acceptance and rejections for article submissions
- Promote ASA Medical Student Component events and resources using social media (e.g. Twitter)
Overview of Diversity and Inclusion Liaison Position:
- Work alongside the President to uphold and ensure diversity, equity and inclusion in all initiatives and efforts put forth by the ASA Medical Student Component Governing Council
- Work with the ASA Committee on Professional Diversity to improve efforts on a national level
Overview of Medical Student Delegate and Alternate Delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA) Medical Student Section (MSS) Position:
- Represent the ASA in a manner consistent with ASA policies and positions.
- Provide a yearly report from the AMA MSS to the ASA Medical Student Component with respect to national issues
- Alternate Delegate will learn the responsibilities of the Medical Student Delegate to the AMA-MSS and become familiar with the role
Overview of Senior Advisor Position:
- Offer guidance on issues pertaining to medical school, transition to residency, and other issues
- Update the Program Director interviews for that application season and update the website library
- Plan and organize the annual Anesthesia Post Match Panel for the next application cycle
- Organize the ASA Mentorship Match program with the assistance of the other Governing Council officers in the spring of the term
- Gather input from students on how the Governing Council can improve resources regarding the residency application process and fourth year anesthesia rotations
Overview of Member Outreach Coordinator:
- Serve as the national contact for all Anesthesia Interest Groups (AIGs)
- Develop creative ASA MSC initiatives related to AIG work, membership outreach and organized communication
