Drs. Gary Schwartz and Barbara Orlando, both fellows of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, join Dr. Striker to discuss the FASA credential – what it is, why it matters, and how it’s achieved. Gary Schwartz, MD, FASA, serves as the vice chair of pain and anesthesiology at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He is also the director of AABP Integrative Pain Management. He serves as the chair of the FASA subcommittee for the membership committee of the ASA. Dr. Schwartz is passionate about acute pain, interventional pain, and preventing chronic post operative pain. Dr. Schwartz has lectured throughout the country on these topics as well as teaching numerous physicians ultrasound and fluoroscopic guided procedures.
Barbara Orlando, MD, PhD, FASA, is currently and associate professor in the department of anesthesiology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. Throughout her career, Dr. Orlando has been actively involved as a clinician anesthesiologist and researcher. She served as assistant professor of anesthesiology, clinical base year director, OB anesthesia research director, and wellness champion at Morningside and Mount Sinai West Hospitals.
Dr. Orlando completed her two anesthesiology residencies in Paris, France at the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital and in the US at the Montefiore Medical Center. She completed an OB anesthesia fellowship training in New York and also received a master’s degree in biology and pharmacology of haemostasis and vessels in France. She also serves as a contributing member of multiple prominent national academic societies, including the Society for Education in Anesthesia, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Society of Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology. In her role as the new division chief of OB anesthesia at UTHealth Houston, she is centering her research efforts in the area of patient safety.
Adam Striker, MD, FASA, is the past chair of the ASA’s Committee on Communications and is the series editor for ASA’s Central Line podcast series. He is Professor of Anesthesiology at Medical College of Wisconsin, a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist at Children’s Wisconsin and serves as Director of Clinical Operations for pediatric anesthesiology at Children's Wisconsin. He received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Purdue University and his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed his pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Northwestern University.
