Episode 154: Inside the Monitor - Advances in Pain Medicine

Beth Darnall, PhD

Beth Darnall, PhD, is professor of anesthesiology, perioperative, and pain medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and director of the Stanford Pain Relief Innovations Lab. A psychologist-scientist, she leads NIH and PCORI-funded national studies on scalable behavioral analgesic interventions and patient-centered opioid reduction. She develops, investigates and disseminates solutions that offer more equitable access to evidence-based behavioral pain care for diverse and underserved populations across the continuum of care (acute, perioperative, chronic pain).

Dr. Darnall has three times briefed the U.S. Congress and the FDA on patient-centered pain care and opioid stewardship. She has keynoted national pain society conferences in Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Switzerland and the U.K. In 2018 she spoke on the psychology of pain relief at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Meredith Barad, MD

Meredith Barad, MD, is a clinical associate professor in anesthesiology (pain) and neurology at Stanford. She is the co-director of the Stanford Facial Pain Program and focuses on headache and facial pain. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated from Stanford University Medical School in 2003, where she also did a neurology residency and pain fellowship at Stanford. She is board certified in neurology, headache and pain. She is the associate division chief of education and program director for the pain fellowship. She is the current president of the American Pain Program Directors. She serves as the chair of the headache and facial pain special interest group for the American Academy of Pain Medicine and is on the editorial board of Pain Medicine.

Zachary Deutch, MD, FASA

Zachary Deutch, MD, FASA, is an attending physician with US Anesthesia Partners-Florida and is a guest editor for The Central Line Podcast. Dr. Deutch serves on the editorial board for the ASA Monitor, and is the author of the bimonthly column "Ask The Expert." Dr. Deutch is also the physician review editor of the ASA Monitor Today, is a member of several ASA Committees, and is an at-large member of the ASA House of Delegates from Florida.

Dr. Deutch is a graduate of Princeton University and The George Washington University School of Medicine. His residency training was done at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, followed by a cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
