Drs. Henry Rosenberg and Kumar Belani, guest editor of the February ASA Monitor, speak with Dr. Zach Deutch about genetic breakthroughs in malignant hyperthermia. Henry Rosenberg, MD, is a graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He trained in Anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and completed a fellowship in Pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania. After rising to the rank of Associate Professor at Penn, Dr. Rosenberg became Professor and Chairman of Anesthesiology at Hahnemann University serving for 17 years and then became Vice Chair for Research and Academic Affairs at Thomas Jefferson University Department of Anesthesiology before serving as Director of Medical Education and Clinical Research at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey.
Dr. Rosenberg’s work in Malignant Hyperthermia began after attending the first International MH workshop on MH in 1971. He established muscle biopsy contracture testing at Penn and later Hahnemann and then Jefferson. He received the Distinguished Service Award of the ASA in 2014. In 1981 he cofounded the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the US . After serving on the Board, he became President of MHAUS until 2021. Dr. Rosenberg is well known for his many laboratory and clinical studies of MH and related disorders. He is a frequent speaker at national and international meetings and remains active in advancing the science and management of the potentially fatal inherited disorder.
Kumar Belani, MBBS, MS, FACA, FAAP, is a distinguished international professor at the Academic Health Center, University of Minnesota, and serves as professor in the department of anesthesiology and as an adjunct professor in medicine and pediatrics in the Schools of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Belani received the 2018 University of Minnesota President’s Award for Outstanding Service, which recognizes his exceptional service and commitment to the university and community, and was inducted into the academy of excellence in the clinical sciences in 2018.
Throughout his career, Dr. Belani has served in various leaderships roles, including as president of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia, president of the Minnesota Society of Anesthesiology, research director of Anesthesiology, executive advisory committee member for the International Medical Education and Research Program, secretary for the Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia, visiting professor at St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, professor of global health, Narayana Hrudayalaya Institute of Medical Sciences, and medical school admissions committee and scholastic standing committee, University of Minnesota.
Zachary Deutch, MD, FASA, is an attending physician with US Anesthesia Partners-Florida and is a guest editor for The Central Line Podcast. Dr. Deutch serves on the editorial board for the ASA Monitor, and is the author of the bimonthly column "Ask The Expert." Dr. Deutch is also the physician review editor of the ASA Monitor Today, is a member of several ASA Committees, and is an at-large member of the ASA House of Delegates from Florida.
Dr. Deutch is a graduate of Princeton University and The George Washington University School of Medicine. His residency training was done at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, followed by a cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
