Drs. Jeans Santana and Gage Parr from the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists join Dr. Adam Striker to discuss the role of cardiac anesthesiologists in and beyond the OR, the use of transesophageal echocardiography, recent AHA guidelines, and more. Recorded January 2025.
Jeans Miguel Santana, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist with certifications in adult cardiothoracic anesthesia and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). He received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, in Brooklyn, NY in 2017. He completed his anesthesiology residency at SUNY Downstate and affiliated hospitals as a Chief Resident in 2021. While a Chief Resident, he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society and is a lifetime member. In 2022, he completed his adult cardiothoracic fellowship at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA.
Throughout his development, Dr. Santana has received several prestigious awards and grants. He has presented at multiple national and international meetings and has co-authored several manuscripts. He has also reviewed case abstracts for presentations at national and international meetings and is an active member of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He currently serves on SCA’s Quality Safety and Value Committee, and ASA’s Committee on Communications and Committee on Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesia. He also serves as a Special Faculty member of Fairfield University's student registered nurse anesthesia (SRNA) program.
Dr. Santana's interests include: community outreach; patient satisfaction, engagement and education; student education; and TEE. He maintains an active YouTube channel to educate patients and trainees on a global scale.
Kathleen Gage Parr, MD, is a cardiac anesthesiologist, associate professor and vice chair for quality for the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, George Washington University in Washington DC. In addition, she serves as the Perioperative Safety Officer at the George Washington University Hospital. Dr. Parr’s interest include TEE, anesthesia for the cardiac patient undergoing non-cardiac surgery, and perioperative quality and safety. She goes by her middle name, Gage.
Dr. Parr received her undergraduate degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University. She received her doctorate in medicine from the University of Alabama School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham. She completed her anesthesia residency, served as Chief Resident, and completed her cardiac anesthesia fellowship at The Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard University. Following residency, she was an assistant professor and cardiac anesthesiologist in the Department of Anesthesia at Johns Hopkins University. She was then a private practice cardiac anesthesiologist at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD. She moved to Northern Virginia and began work at George Washington University in 2015. Adam Striker, MD, FASA, is the past chair of the ASA’s Committee on Communications and is the series editor for ASA’s Central Line podcast series. He is Professor of Anesthesiology at Medical College of Wisconsin, a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist at Children’s Wisconsin and serves as Director of Clinical Operations for pediatric anesthesiology at Children's Wisconsin. He received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Purdue University and his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed his pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Northwestern University.
