Michael Hofkamp and Sara Neves from the Society for Education in Anesthesia join guest host, Dr. Brooke Trainer, to discuss medical student and resident education – how education is evolving, challenges young anesthesiologists face as they transition into practice, the role of non-clinical training, and more. Michael Hofkamp, MD, FASA is an associate professor of anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine, is the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for the Department of Anesthesiology, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Temple, and is the co-chair of the Medical Student Education Committee of the Society for Education in Anesthesia. Dr. Hofkamp has an interest in medical student education and growing the specialty of anesthesiology.
Dr. Hofkamp received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago and attended medical school at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. He did an internship in internal medicine at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL and a residency in anesthesiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Hofkamp enjoys engaging with medical students and residents on Twitter with medical education topics.
Sara Neves is the program director for the anesthesia residency program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, MA. She completed anesthesiology training at Yale New Haven Hospital and her fellowship in critical care medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She serves as chair of the Committee for Resident Education for the Society of Education in Anesthesia and is a member of the Committee on Occupational Health and the Committee on Residents and Medical Students of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Her interests are diverse and include resident feedback, curriculum development, wellness and substance abuse prevention, and improvement of resident recruitment practices. Her clinical interests include anesthesia for complex vascular procedures, POCUS, and the management of patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in the ICU. She enjoys spending her free time with her husband and two young daughters.
Brooke E. Trainer, MD, FASA, remains devoted to her fellow Veterans and maintains her full-time status as an anesthesiologist, acute pain physician, and critical care medicine Intensivist at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System in Richmond VA. She is also an assistant professor of anesthesiology at Virginia Commonwealth University where she works as a critical care intensivist in the liver transplant and surgical trauma burn ICU. Most recently, Dr. Trainer was recognized for her contributions and interest in simulation education and was granted a national faculty position with the VHA Simulation Learning Education and Research Network (SimLEARN) Division.
Dr. Trainer received her doctor of medicine from the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL, completed her anesthesia residency at Yale New Haven Medical Center in Connecticut, and fellowship in critical care medicine at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia. She is a US Air Force veteran, having served as an anesthesiologist at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and director for the Critical Care Air Transport Teams (CCATT). She deployed in 2012, '13, and '14 to Afghanistan from Germany, flying wounded soldiers safely out of Afghanistan back to Germany, then home to the US. In 2012, she was recognized as the top-level physician of the European Medical Command and was awarded the US Air Force European Clinical Excellence Award. Dr. Trainer also holds several leadership positions in organized medicine, including her current role as the president for the Association of VA Anesthesiologists, and has published numerous book chapters in internationally recognized Anesthesia Textbooks.
