Sheela Pai Cole, MD, FASE, FASA, is a clinical professor of anesthesiology, pain and perioperative medicine and director of grand rounds education at the department of anesthesiology at Stanford University in Palo Alto. Dr. Pai Cole is passionate about educating the next generation of anesthesiology especially in the fields of cardiac anesthesiology, echocardiography, and critical care.
Dr. Pai Cole received her undergraduate degree at the University of Mumbai and moved to the United States to pursue anesthesiology residency at Temple University and went on to complete fellowships in cardiac anesthesiology and critical care at the University of Chicago. She served as assistant and associate professor at Temple University prior to moving to Stanford. In addition to chairing ASA’s 2023 annual meeting, her professional pursuits include being on the board of the Society for Critical Care Anesthesiologists, and a voting member on the medical school admissions committee at Stanford. She is also a member of the writing committee on critical care echocardiography examination with the National Board of Echocardiography, committee member of the Echo Week program committee at the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and has been program chair for several societal annual meetings including American Society of Echocardiography and Society for Critical care anesthesiologists. Her academic interests include imaging for temporary mechanical circulatory support, 3D echo-imaging, acute kidney injury, patient centered communication and physician well-being and burnout. She lives in Redwood City, CA with her husband and rescue puppy Major and enjoys swimming, skiing, hikes, and photography.
Santhanam Suresh, MD, MBA, is the Arthur C. King professor of anesthesiology and pediatrics and senior vice president, chief of provider integration, at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Suresh is passionate about advancing safe and effective pain management to enhance children’s postoperative recovery. To that end, Dr. Suresh has introduced several innovative pain relief measures including peripheral nerve blocks that are now universally utilized.
Dr. Suresh received his MB, BS at Stanley Medical College in Madras India. He completed a residency in pediatrics at Cook County Hospital, a residency in anesthesiology at Loyola University, and a fellowship at Northwestern’s Children’s Memorial Hospital. Dr. Suresh also holds an MBA from Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He was the chair of ASA’s Annual Meeting Oversite Committee in 2022.
