Dr. Jannicke Mellin-Olsen, past president of the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists, joins Dr. Striker to talk about World Patient Safety Day and patient safety more broadly. Jannicke Mellin-Olsen, MD, DPH, is the past president of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists, representing anesthesiologists in 150 countries in official relations with the World Health Organization. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation and served as president of the European Board of Anaesthesiologists, working to develop the Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology. She also served as the secretary of the European Society of Anesthesiology and has held many other organizational positions. Dr. Melllin-Olsen currently practices at Baerum Hospital, Oslo, Norway.
Dr. Mellin-Olsen’s professional interests include patient safety, education and health politics. In September 2021, the King of Norway appointed her as Knight 1st Class of the Order of St.Olav, the highest civilian honor currently conferred by Norway, due to her services in healthcare.
Adam Striker, MD, FASA, is currently Chair of the ASA Committee on Communications and serves as a delegate to the ASA House of Delegates from the state of Missouri. He is the series editor for ASA’s Central Line podcast series. He is a member of Anesthesia Associates of Kansas City and practices at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, where he currently serves as Anesthesiologist-in-Chief. He received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Purdue University and his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed his pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Northwestern University.
