Dr. Steve Shafer, Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Stanford University Medical Center and Editor-in-Chief of the Monitor, returns to the show to discuss the January issue, on the topic of COVID, with articles addressing therapeutics, vaccines, herd immunity, staffing, and more. Dr. Shafer also touches on what he’s learning from modeling COVID numbers and shares his plans for 2021 issues of the Monitor. Recorded December 2020.
Steven L. Shafer, MD, is Editor-in-Chief of the ASA Monitor. He is Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences at UCSF. He completed his undergraduate training at Princeton University, his medical training at Stanford University, his anesthesiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania, and his fellowship training in Clinical Pharmacology at Stanford. His research focus is the clinical pharmacology of intravenous anesthetics.
Adam Striker, MD, FASA, is currently Chair of the ASA Committee on Communications, and is the series editor for ASA’s Central Line podcast series. He is an Associate Professor and serves as staff anesthesiologist in the Division of Cardiac Anesthesia at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and in the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia at Kentucky Children’s Hospital as part of the Joint Congenital Heart Care Program. He received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Purdue University and his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed his pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Northwestern University.
