One element of professionalism is the application of ethical principles to our interactions with patients, colleagues, institutions, and society. It is a cornerstone of anesthesiology practice and has become increasingly important in an ever more complex health care environment. Appropriate professional conduct creates an environment that improves patient safety and further affirms the integrity of the specialty.
The fundamentals of professionalism in anesthesiology have been delineated in the Society’s “Guidelines for the Ethical Practice of Anesthesiology.” This document is worthy of promotion so it becomes familiar to all practicing physician anesthesiologists.
