Education transparency and accurate representation of health care professional titles safeguard patients. Anesthesiology is the practice of Medicine. The safe delivery of anesthesia care depends on a clear understanding of each team member's role, respective qualifications, and expertise. Accurate identification of health care professional titles allow patients and their families to make informed decisions about their care. Non-physicians' use of the medical specialty title Anesthesiologist causes confusion leading health care teams and patients to believe a physician is providing or supervising their anesthesia care. The title, Anesthesiologist, refers to a physician who has completed an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education residency or equivalent training in anesthesiology. Non-physician anesthetists are important Anesthesia Care Team members but have different clinical roles, qualifications, and skills than an Anesthesiologist.
Ensuring clarity in medical professional titles is essential to maintaining safety, trust, and transparency in the patient care process, ultimately empowering patients to understand who is responsible for their anesthesia care.
