CHICAGO – The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA) today announced a call for nominations for the new ASA-SEA Distinguished Educator in Anesthesiology awards. The award recognizes mid-career physicians who have demonstrated a substantial commitment and achievement as educators in the field of anesthesiology.
“We’re excited to collaborate with SEA on this effort, an organization that shares our values regarding the importance of education to improve patient care,” said ASA President Linda J. Mason, M.D., FASA. “It’s important for mid-level career physicians, those who have been in practice 5-15 years, to be recognized for their contributions and achievements in anesthesiology education. Recognizing these individuals helps to move the profession forward and serves as an opportunity for networking and continued mentorship of young educators and residents.”
The ASA-SEA Distinguished Educator in Anesthesiology award is open to all mid-career ASA or SEA members in good standing. The process to be considered for the award is by self-nomination. Judging criteria are based on contributions in several different categories, including leadership, scholarly contributions and innovation. Nominations are accepted year-round and award recipients will be announced regularly on ASA and SEA’s websites. Inaugural recipients will receive a certificate and special recognition at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® annual meeting, Oct. 19-23, 2019 in Orlando.
“A core element of SEA’s mission is supporting and advancing anesthesia educators,” said Stephanie B. Jones, M.D., SEA president-elect and a member of the steering committee that developed the award. “This joint effort with ASA will increase the visibility of those dedicating their careers to education at their home institutions and nationally, which in turn will enhance collaboration and support academic promotion.”
