CHICAGO — The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today announced Heron Therapeutics, Solventum, Baxter, Pacira Biosciences and Vertex have joined ASA’s Center for Perioperative Medicine (CPMed) Corporate Advisory Council (CAC) to improve patient care and outcomes in perioperative medicine.
“We are excited to establish a collaboration with these leading industry partners and thank them for their support of ASA’s Center for Perioperative Medicine,” said ASA President Donald E. Arnold, M.D., FACHE, FASA. “With expertise in pharmacology, physiology, technology, and care coordination, anesthesiologists are uniquely qualified in addressing complex issues that negatively impact patients in the perioperative period. We look forward to working with the members of the CPMed CAC to advance our shared visions of advancing perioperative medicine to improve patient safety and quality of care.”
The CPMed is an organization that serves to integrate various initiatives focused on perioperative medicine in both anesthesiology and other related fields, to improve and optimize outcomes through coordinated patient care, with a comprehensive and multidisciplinary collaborative approach. This includes physician colleagues, nurses, allied health practitioners and administrators who encompass the entire continuum of care throughout the patient’s surgical journey. The CPMed focuses on the core principles of quality, operations, education, innovation and advocacy, and its goal is to facilitate sharing of knowledge, experiences, and best practices to establish a unified approach to advance the field of perioperative medicine.
The CPMed CAC helps drive thought leadership and innovation in perioperative medicine and further programs that promote optimal and cost-effective care for patients undergoing surgical procedures. Specifically, the CPMed CAC supports events, including the ANESTHESIOLOGY® annual meeting, with valuable educational resources to improve patient care in perioperative medicine; and yearly perioperative stakeholder summits, to share information, identify areas for collaboration, and engage with members of the perioperative community. The CAC also supports CPMed efforts such as the development of an American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)- and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accepted fellowship curriculums in perioperative medicine; and more.
“Solventum is proud to participate in ASA’s CPMed Corporate Advisory Council. This forum provides the opportunity to share best practices, empower health care professionals and provides access to a broad range of clinical education and partnership opportunities to improve patient experience and compliance to perioperative guidelines,” said Kristi Barnett, Sr. Director, Surgical Solutions Segment.

Perioperative Medicine is a multi-disciplinary approach that encompasses the entire continuum of care for patients undergoing surgery, interventions or invasive procedures. The goal of perioperative medicine is to improve patient outcomes and reduce morbidity and mortality rates throughout the entire perioperative period. This is achieved through collaboration among health care providers, including anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, and other specialists, to ensure well-coordinated and comprehensive care for the patient. The ultimate aim is to enhance the patient's overall health, function, quality of life, and experience both during and after the surgical or invasive procedure.
