Anesthesia Workforce Summit I

In June 2022, ASA held its first Anesthesia Workforce Summit (AWS), chaired by ASA past president, Dr. Mary Dale Peterson. The primary purpose of this meeting was to identify actionable strategies that ASA can implement to help alleviate, both short- and long-term, the perceived imbalance in the supply of and demand for anesthesia professionals. Summit task force members were a cross-section representation from medical societies, academic institutions, certifying organizations, hospitals, hospital networks, and physician practices, gathered to examine the current data from CAWS and propose solutions.

Four work groups were established from this task force:

• New Training Paradigms
• Harnessing the Workforce Potential
• Staffing and Efficiency in the Operating Room
• Anesthesiologist Utilization, Non-Operating Room Anesthesia (NORA), and Sedation Models
